There was a time when you were content in the work. Now there is a restlessness, as though there were something you meant to do and can no longer name. It may already be showing in your productivity. It may be a matter of perspective, or it may be time for a change.
Either way, naming it is the first hurdle cleared. The question is what to do with it, and how to turn discontent into a reason to change something.
Reflect. Ask yourself these questions.
- What did I enjoy the most about my work?
- What brought me the most satisfaction?
- Why did I gain enjoyment and satisfaction from those assignments?
- Are those still a part of my routine, or have my responsibilities changed?
It may not be the work at all, but something in your personal life. Reflect on it without dwelling on it, then choose your response to it.
- If it aligns with a time of loss, find reasons to give thanks.
- If someone hurt you, choose to forgive.
- If you made a blunder, forgive yourself and determine what you can learn from it for the future.
Once you can name some of the reasons, act on them. Start by clearing the ground:
- Your thoughts, anything negative from the past or about the present/future.
- Your schedule: make time to just be, take time for family and friends.
- Your possessions: clear the excess and keep the things you actually need.
- Take care of yourself: exercise, sleep, eat well.
- Develop a hobby that brings you peace, tranquility, and joy or energy and excitement.
- Learn something new that adds to your resume and brings some satisfaction with it.
- Take time to create.
- Volunteer. Help someone.
- Spend more time with those who matter to you.
Watch how you speak to people. Turn negative statements into questions. Instead of “you’re wrong,” try “have you considered doing it this way?” or “what is your read on it?”
As that satisfaction returns, you can be more discerning about the work itself, and you will see more clearly what actually needs to change.
- Was it primarily a personal issue and your career is on track?
- Do you appreciate the company culture and want to stay, but need to try a new challenge or work in a different department?
- Is it time to polish the resume, add some training, and make a change?
